About Us

New Social Fabric was founded by Dr. Muna Shami in response to the evolving social worlds children are navigating today.

Across 25 years working at the intersection of research, evaluation, policy, and practice in the field of education, Muna has visited well over 100 schools and learned from teachers, principals, and non-formal educators about the needs of children and our schools.

In classrooms across a range of communities, she saw schools working diligently to meet academic and social and emotional goals — yet lacking intentional space for students to explore identity and connect with their peers around their lived experiences. New Social Fabric grew out of that gap.

Muna holds master's degrees in Counseling and Developmental Psychology, as well as a Ph.D. in Education Studies, grounding her work in an understanding of child development, relational systems, the broader educational landscape, and the role of schools in society.

What drives Muna's work is simple: she believes every child's story deserves to be told, heard, and celebrated — and that schools can be the place where that happens. New Social Fabric is her answer to that belief.
